A Poem - Dawn

As published in Travel Africa Magazine

Edition 16

Summer 2001

Pause for Poetry

I first travelled to Africa in a converted Lancaster Bomber over 50 years ago. I have lived in South Africa and Nigeria and spend most of my holidays in Africa. I have just returned from my fourth visit to the Victoria Falls (the first was in 1976). I wrote the following poem, which is about my favourite place in the world.

DAWN

Electricity-struck flotsam

I am tossed by the waves

onto your dark beach

to wait in your cold until

your black dog nuzzles me to your notice

I am cleaned of my sand with other jetsam to await my rebirth

Take me home to be caressed by your northern waves

to feel your blazing logs without charring

to see your frosty brittle stars

I'll take you home to hear my thundering smoke

to wrap you in my river, my velvety southern sky,

to hear my sounds, to feel my sun,

to taste my African dawn
